Mustek PF-A950PS flat panel speaker picture frame

Mustek is hoping to have discovered a previously untapped segment of the digital photo frame market - those that want a single device to display their pictures and pump out some tunes.

Its new PF-A950PS frame combines a 9.5in LCD display with NXT flat panel speaker technology to create a device that can be both seen and heard. The speaker is virtually invisible, but fills the entire front of the panel creating strong, crisp sound - much clearer than frames that hide a normal speaker round the back.

It has a resolution of 800x480 pixels and comes with 128MB of internal memory for storing images. It's compatible with SD, MMC, Memory Stick, XD, and Compact Flash cards and supports JPEG photos, AVI, MJPEG or Xvid video files and MP3 audio.

The PF-A950PS will be available in May for $249.99 (about £125) in the US, UK availability has yet to be announced. For more information see Mustek.

LG GGW-H20L dual format HD drive

The Blu-ray camp may be breaking out the champagne and declaring victory in the HD format war, but if you're still holding out hope for HD DVD or just want to spread some of the risk then LG has just the drive for you.

Not only can its GGW-H20L read and write Blu-ray discs, but it can also playback HD DVDs too so if the latter makes an eleventh hour comeback you won't be stuck with a useless paperweight.

It can read and write Blu-ray discs at 6x and play HD DVD titles at 3x. With the ability to store up to 50GB on a dual layer Blu-ray disc - over ten times that of a single layer DVD - you won't need to spread your backups up over a large number discs.

BlackBerry Pearl 8110 with GPS

What's better than a BlackBerry Pearl smartphone? A BlackBerry Pearl smartphone with built in GPS. Unlike the WiFi enabled Pearl 8820 released at the end of last year, the 8810 swaps fast wireless data for satnav, so you'll always be able to find your way to your destination.

The 8110 also ups the camera rating of the original Pearl to a semi-decent 2 megapixels and adds the ability to capture video as well. If you buy one on Vodafone it also comes with a 12 month subscription to Vodafone Sat Nav thrown in for free.

It also supports all the usual BlackBerry features you'd expect, so email becomes as easy to manage as text messages. Of course, the ultimate Pearl would be one with both GPS and WiFi built-in, but then you can't always get what you want.

The Pearl 8110 is available now from free on contract from Vodafone.

AlertMe home monitoring system

AlertMe is looking to change the home security market with its new system that allows you to keep tabs on what's happening in your home when you're not there. The kit can be self installed without the need for running wires all over your house or drilling into the walls.

Once it's in place it can monitor what's happening while you're out and alert you to potential break-ins or fires via text message or email. The system can also be set up to notify nearby friends or family so they can check if things are okay if you're 400 miles away.

Individual family members can be assigned their own identifiable key fobs, so you can even get an alert so you know children have arrived home safely while you're out.

AlertMe is available now as a kit for £399, plus £11.75 per month for the monitoring service. For more information see AlertMe.

Hauppauge WinTV-CI

There are plenty of free channels available on Freeview and satellite, but sometimes even the most tolerant of people can tire of watching the same episode of Friends for the umpteenth time. If you're watching through a set top box, then you can simply sign up for a subscription and expand your entertainment options, but it's not simple if you're watching via a PC.

Encrypted channels require a viewing card to decode the content and without a slot to put one in, you're pretty much stuck. The new WinTV-CI from Hauppauge, however, includes a Common Interface slot which will accept your viewing card via a CAM (conditional access module) so you can start watching TV that was previously out of bounds.

Before you get too excited, it won't work with Sky (mainly because Sky hasn't released a suitable CAM), but you can use it with Top Up TV or Setanta Sports on Freeview or many European satellite channels. You'll also need a compatible Hauppauge TV card too.

The WinTV-CI is available now for £79.99, see Hauppauge for further details.

NewerTech Universal Drive Adapter

If your laptop is on its last legs, or your computer is refusing to boot and you haven't got a recent backup of your files then NewerTech's Universal Drive Adapter could come in handy. If it's the computer that's the problem and not the hard drive itself, then you can whip it out, hook it up to the device and copy over your precious data to a new machine.

The Universal Drive Adapter, as the name implies, works with all drives currently available - whether it's a 2.5in, 3.5in or 5.25in model and connects via IDE or SATA. Once you've got the drive hooked up, just plug it into a spare USB port on the new machine and you're ready to go.

It supports USB 2.0, so you won't have to hang around too long waiting for it to transfer your files and it's also backwards compatible with the slower USB 1.1 standard.

The Universal Drive Adapter will be available at the end of January, UK pricing has yet to be determined. See NewerTech for more information.
